Recent Molecular Biology studies, deriving from the Human Microbiome Project, have highlighted the increasingly important role of the Microbiota. The so-called “Microbiome Revolution” is modifying medical concepts of physiopathology applied until now. Each area of the body has a specific ecosystem which if kept in balance, determines our well-being. In women of all ages, Microbiome variations may alter the balance of the ecosystem, causing the insurgence of specific diseases. Currently available treatments are proving to be insufficient, not so much as temporary resolutions to the disease, but especially as a remedy for recurring cases. Not only do acute and chronic genital-urinary infections cause psycho-affective discomfort in women, they also affect public health. Research is becoming increasingly oriented towards the study of strain-specific probiotics, capable of re-establishing ecosystemic balance, so as to guarantee health, especially in terms of prevention.
