East and West meet in Bastia Umbra on Saturday 14th July at the Minerva Auditorium of S&R Farmaceutici spa. The occasion is ‘PartOriente’, a training course for doctors looking to find out more about ‘similarities and differences of medicine and patients from the south and far east’ in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics. Maurizio Bini, scientific director of the course, has been tasked with introducing both sessions which will focus on topics like ‘From the other world: the Chinese patient’, with Bini himself; ‘The infertile Asian couple with Dr. Cristofaro De Stefano; ‘Unexplained infertility and Korean medicine’ with Drs. Patrizia Betti and Paola Costa; ‘Kaguya: the Japanese and parthenogenesis’ with Drs. Tiziana Brevin and Giulia Cafueri. Bini will also report on polycystic ovary syndrome (Pcos), while Dr. Stefania Piccolo will explain ethic and genetic differences in Pcos. Different therapies suitable for the treatment of Pcos will then be analysed, from the use of Asian and western supplements, with the contribution of prof. Alfonsa Pizzo, to acupuncture, with Dr. Patrizia Betti, and ‘inducing ovulation with prof. Sandro Gerli. The second session will open with a module on ‘Pregnancy and giving birth’ and prof. Bini will provide in-depth insight into the topic of nutrition and deficiencies in pregnant women from the far and south east.

Vaginal infections during pregnancy will also be discussed with Dr. Stefano Palomba, as well as ‘Giving birth and the C-Section epidemic in China’, with Dr. Alessandro Svelato, moxibustion and acupuncture with Dr. Rosario D’Agostino and postpartum haemorrhage with Dr. Maria Pia Pisoni. The training day will conclude with a postpartum module during which Yang reactivation strategies will be discussed with prof. Bini and possible consequent phases of depression, together with Mariano Bassi, who will also discuss notions of ethnic psychiatry. The link between breast feeding and Confucianism will be discussed with Dr. Ilaria Grassi; lastly, child obesity will be covered with Emanuela Carioni.
